100BAYS

From a model case to a hundred bays

Core Focus

100BAYS enables coastal communities to diagnose and restore their own shallow bays, and builds the practices and institutions to scale up its scale for Swedish bays. Working at one known case on the Bohuslän coast, the project develops an integrated bay diagnostic for coastal restoration and nutrient reduction with community-led interventions.

Challenge

Shallow coastal bays are degrading through algae, summer hypoxia, and lost seagrass and fish habitat, yet recovery is slow. Bay dynamics operate below the scale at which formal water management acts, where the only standing actor is the local community. Existing tools, data and funding are calibrated for agencies, not residents, and local associations lack the mandate and capacity to act.

Key Activities

  • Refine an integrated three-flows bay diagnostic at the pilot site.
  • Co-develop and design construction-ready local interventions.
  • Distil the method into a handbook for transfer to other bays.
  • Characterise candidate bays and build a scale-up agenda.
  • Run community workshops and a standing advisory group.
